Once upon a time in the fall of 2004, I went to a YES concert. The opening act was a band I had never heard of, called Dream Theater. Not knowing them, I arrived at the seating area as they were taking their final bows. But over at the cocktail area, I kept noticing a lot of people wearing Dream Theater T-shirts.
A month later, I was in a music store browsing, and came upon DT’s live @ Boudakan DVD, the day it was released. Remembering the name from the YES show, I thought I’d take a chance and buy it. And ya know, sometimes there are times in life when we just make right decisions, and the decision to buy this DVD changed my musical life FOREVER!
I had never been so amazed by a group of musicians (and mind you, I am now 56 years old). Their performances just blew me away. Literally. I was absolutely awe-struck. I couldn’t believe the technical perfection and the sheer musical brilliance and genius of this band. Where had I been? Why had I not heard of this band before? Suffice it to say, this DVD opened up a very wide door for me musically. Since that purchase, I have purchased EVERY CD the band has recorded, two more DVD’s and seen another concert. As far as I’m concerned, this band is the culmination of every bit of rock and progressive-rock music I have ever enjoyed from the 70’s until now. And by the way, of the other DVD’s of theirs I own, “Boudakan” is the best. EVERYTHING about BOTH discs on this DVD is just great. So if you’re reading this, get this DVD NOW, or be a LOSER!!!!!!

“Dream Theater – Live at Budokan” Overview
Dream Theater is well known for cutting-edge progressive metal style and exceptional musicianship, but the band is also renowned for amazing live shows. This two-DVD set features a concert taped in 2004 at the Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Disc One is the complete live concert. Disc Two is packed with special features, including a Japanese tour documentary, guitar/keyboard/drum solos, the tour opening video, an interview with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess, and a multiangle version of “Instrumedley.” Features three hours of brand-new footage.
“Dream Theater – Live at Budokan” Specifications
A treasure-trove for Dream Theater fans, Live at Budokan presents an entire three-hour performance at Tokyo’s famed Budokan arena on April 26, 2004, along with a bonus disc rich in supplementary material. Disc 1 finds the metallic progressive-rock quintet at its awe-inspiring best, plowing through its catalog of dramatic epics and jack-hammer instrumentals, including five of the seven songs from 2003’s Train of Thought. Disc 2 features an extended drum solo from percussionist extraordinaire Mike Portnoy; gear tours from guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (fascinating for lay people and downright revelatory for musicians); and a half-hour documentary on DT’s 2004 stint in Japan punctuated by tantalizing snippets of band rehearsals. The shooting and editing for the concert are a music lover’s dream, with lengthy shots that linger on the performances of individual band members. Disc 2 takes this even further with a multi-angle sequence of the 12-minute “Instrumedley.”
Production values are extremely high: it’s a widescreen presentation shot on high-def video and nicely mixed for multichannel Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (with a thinner, collapsed version of the same for Dolby 2.0). It must be noted, however, that the center, subwoofer, and surround channels get jumbled right at 1:35:30 on disc 1. The front left/right channels remain in place, but the signals for the other four speakers play non-musical chairs. People listening in 2.0 will experience a brief dropout at that point. –Michael Mikesell
Customer Reviews
If you want to see Dream Theater, but they are not in town…GET THIS. – Matt Culbertson –
This is definitely one of the best live DVDs I own. If you are a fan of Dream Theater, this is the DVD I would purchase from them. If you are not very familiar with Dream Theater, but like a mixture of rock, metal, pretty melodies, and exciting keyboard and guitar solos; this is a great find. Dream Theater puts on 3 hour long shows and it is entertaining from beginning to end. The camera work and sound quality is very well above par. So, the concert experience is great. The second disc is great too! It features a unique, interactive (with audience) drum solo from Mike Portnoy, a well-made documentary of the band touring around Japan on a train (ironically the ‘Train of Thought’), and other content such as a walkthrough of John Petrucci’s guitar rig. I think rock and metal fans would be interested in this, but Dream Theater fans should definitely have this for it is a greatly recorded concert that shows the very best of what Dream Theater can do.
You already knew it…another opus – –
Simply…Great this set of 2 discs are those things that you have to see any times without getting bored.
Thanks Dream Theater-
Dream Theater brings it LIVE – Ralph B. Keele – Tucson
This has pretty much everything I would want in a live DVD. Excellent material, outstanding musicianship, terrific editing of the filmed material.
Usually bands that assemble recordings by playing and singing in short bursts and then combining them have trouble bringing what they do to the stage. Dream Theater is an exception to this. Are the songs the same as on the recording? NO Are they still stunningly well done? YES
They are tight, superb players, and vocally excellent. I have now watched this concert over 10 times and am still finding it riveting and seeing new examples of their greatness.
My personal favorite is the Instrumedley. 12 minutes of solo and ensemble instrumental parts from DT and various side projects.
Visually arresting and superbly played. I’m pretty much out of hyperbole so go get it, NOW!!
